Each model has its strengths and weaknesses, and the option you choose should be closely tied to the individual needs, capabilities and regulatory requirements of your particular company. Before we turn to the comparison, it is worth looking at the broader market context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-on-premise-and-cloud-market-trends-what-are-companies-choosing-today\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-brand-cornflower-color has-text-color has-link-color has-2-xl-font-size wp-elements-bd04ad5b02a79b01f03952631929460c\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--md);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xs);font-style:normal;font-weight:700\">On-premise and cloud market trends: what are companies choosing today?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--sm)\">The IT solutions market <strong>has been shifting towards the cloud for years, although this does not mean the local model is disappearing<\/strong>. According to Gartner, global public cloud spending is set to reach almost USD <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/documents\/6996966\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">1.48 trillion<\/a><\/span> by 2029. Eurostat, in turn, reports that in 2025 some <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/web\/interactive-publications\/digitalisation-2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">53% of enterprises in the European Union<\/a><\/span> purchased cloud services, with large organisations (85%) drawing on them far more often than the SME sector (52%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--sm)\">The growing importance of the cloud is accompanied by <strong>interest in the hybrid model<\/strong>. Gartner forecasts that by 2027, 90% of organisations will <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2024-11-19-gartner-forecasts-worldwide-public-cloud-end-user-spending-to-total-723-billion-dollars-in-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">combine the public cloud with on-premise infrastructure<\/a><\/span> or a private cloud. There is also movement in the opposite direction, namely so-called <strong>cloud repatriation<\/strong>: according to the IDC European Cloud Survey, around 14% of companies are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/searchlab.nl\/en\/statistics\/cloud-computing-statistics-2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">moving some of their resources<\/a><\/span> back to local environments, citing cost (42%) and regulatory compliance (38%) as the main reasons. The direction for the coming years is therefore not \u2018cloud instead of on-premise\u2019, but a deliberate combination of both models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--sm)\">Similar tendencies can be observed in the MDM market, with one caveat: publicly available sources do not provide a precise numerical breakdown of MDM deployments into cloud and local. Independent analyst firms (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.grandviewresearch.com\/industry-analysis\/mobile-device-management-market-report\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Grand View Research<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imarcgroup.com\/mobile-device-management-market\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">IMARC<\/span><\/a>) nevertheless agree that the cloud model accounts for the largest share of the market. The <strong>on-premise segment, meanwhile, is not only holding steady but is expected to grow<\/strong>, driven by security, compliance and data privacy requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-digital-sovereignty-a-new-point-of-reference\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-brand-cornflower-color has-text-color has-link-color has-2-xl-font-size wp-elements-643b1fb29bcf671c473294166dc013e1\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--md);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xs);font-style:normal;font-weight:700\">Digital sovereignty \u2013 a new point of reference<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--sm);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--sm)\">The digitalisation of public administration and critical infrastructure, geopolitical tensions and the rising number of cyberattacks mean that <strong>digital sovereignty<\/strong> (the ability to independently control your own infrastructure, data and software) is becoming an important purchasing criterion for IT solutions. When choosing a tool, organisations are increasingly checking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--sm)\" class=\"wp-block-list has-lg-font-size\">\n<li>where their data will be physically stored,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>who has access to it,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>which jurisdiction the provider is subject to,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and how difficult it would be to become independent of that provider.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--sm)\">They have concrete reasons for this. <strong>Extraterritorial legislation in non-EU countries<\/strong>, such as the US CLOUD Act and Section 702 of FISA, allows those countries\u2019 authorities to demand that vendors based there <strong>hand over data regardless of the physical location of the servers<\/strong>. The scale of the European market\u2019s dependence on providers from outside the continent is enormous: according to industry estimates, close to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cigref.fr\/la-dependance-technologique-aux-softwares-cloud-services-americains-une-estimation-des-consequences-economiques-en-europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">80% of the EU\u2019s annual spending<\/a><\/span> on professional cloud services goes to American companies. Europe\u2019s response is to tighten its regulations. The Data Act and the Data Governance Act strengthen control over data and set out clearer rules for sharing it securely across the Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--sm)\">In this context, the choice of provider and deployment model for IT tools, including an MDM system, ceases to be merely a technical or cost question. It is also a deliberate way of <strong>building resilience, business continuity and independence<\/strong> from political and legal turbulence beyond the country\u2019s borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-on-premise-mdm-full-control-within-your-own-infrastructure\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-brand-cornflower-color has-text-color has-link-color has-2-xl-font-size wp-elements-3bd49bad5989340d6224e225d487b421\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--md);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xs);font-style:normal;font-weight:700\">On-premise MDM \u2013 full control within your own infrastructure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--sm)\">An <strong>on-premise MDM<\/strong> deployment involves running the system in the <strong>company\u2019s local IT environment<\/strong>: on its own servers, within its network and under its sole control. The organisation invests in its own infrastructure but, in return, can configure and optimise it freely for security, gaining privacy and independence from vendors and third parties. Physical control over this data rests with the administrator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-compliance-and-sovereignty\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-xl-font-size\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--md);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xs);font-style:normal;font-weight:600\">Compliance and sovereignty<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--sm)\">Since device data never leaves the company\u2019s infrastructure, it is easier to demonstrate compliance with the GDPR, ISO standards and the requirements of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/proget.pl\/en\/blog\/nis2-compliance\/\" id=\"1650\">NIS2<\/a><\/span> Directive, while also avoiding the jurisdictional risk associated with non-EU legislation. This is the main reason on-premise remains the standard wherever sensitive data is processed \u2013 in banking, healthcare, public administration and the defence sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-integration-with-internal-it-infrastructure\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-xl-font-size\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--md);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xs);font-style:normal;font-weight:600\">Integration with internal IT infrastructure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--sm)\">An MDM server operating within your own network connects more securely to local systems without exposing them externally. The company also decides on the update schedule itself. For organisations working in closed networks (in defence or critical infrastructure), a local MDM is sometimes the only permissible option, because cloud solutions are inherently unable to operate in full isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-independence-from-the-provider-and-business-continuity\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-xl-font-size\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--md);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xs);font-style:normal;font-weight:600\">Independence from the provider and business continuity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--sm)\">In the on-premise model, the availability of the MDM server and console does not depend on the condition of an external service provider or on unilateral changes to the terms of service. When problems arise on the cloud provider\u2019s side \u2013 an outage, a service interruption, a contractual dispute, or restrictions resulting from sanctions or geopolitical tensions \u2013 the administrator of a local MDM retains full access to the system and the ability to manage the fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-predictable-cost-with-a-large-fleet\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-xl-font-size\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--md);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xs);font-style:normal;font-weight:600\">Predictable cost with a large fleet<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--sm)\">The local model is based on a one-off investment in infrastructure and an MDM licence rather than on a recurring per-device subscription. With large, stable fleets, the total cost of ownership (TCO) over the long term can be lower than the sum of monthly subscriptions. Full control also means full responsibility: updates, patching vulnerabilities and monitoring the server all rest with the organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-longer-deployment-time\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-xl-font-size\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--md);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xs);font-style:normal;font-weight:600\">Longer deployment time<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--sm)\">Before an administrator can start managing devices, they must prepare the environment, install and configure the software and secure the server. This takes more time than launching a service in the cloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-limited-scalability\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-xl-font-size\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--md);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xs);font-style:normal;font-weight:600\">Limited scalability<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--sm)\">An on-premise MDM requires infrastructure matched to the company\u2019s needs. The organisation does not incur one-off outlays on building its own environment, operating it or expanding its IT team, and it can scale resources according to current needs. In practice, <strong>many cloud MDM systems run in the SaaS<\/strong> (Software as a Service) model, in which the provider maintains both the software and the infrastructure, and the company uses the console through a browser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-advantages-of-a-cloud-mdm-deployment\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-brand-cornflower-color has-text-color has-link-color has-2-xl-font-size wp-elements-520cf7e649f7d4c7d81a75ae6e7fdf80\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--md);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xs);font-style:normal;font-weight:700\">Advantages of a cloud MDM deployment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-low-initial-cost\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-xl-font-size\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--md);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xs);font-style:normal;font-weight:600\">Low initial cost<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--sm)\">The cloud version of MDM is a good solution for new companies that do not yet have their own IT infrastructure, do not process critical data, and for which building a data centre would be disproportionate to their needs at this stage. Per-device subscription billing removes the investment in hardware and ties the cost to the actual size of the fleet.
