The same can be said for all industries where mobility matters and where field workers are the main workforce. How can we make their work easier with the right technologies, including an MDM system? That\u2019s what we\u2019ll discuss in today\u2019s post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-base-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-2-xl-font-size wp-elements-97df2baf774863893a6360754521ff30\" id=\"h-who-are-field-workers-and-why-should-one-invest-in-solutions-for-them\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--md);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xs);font-style:normal;font-weight:600\">Who are field workers, and why should one invest in solutions for them?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--sm);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--sm)\"><strong>Mobile field workers perform their daily tasks in various locations, typically in a much more dynamic environment than the office setting, and often on the front lines of the company\u2019s operations.<\/strong> We\u2019re talking about couriers, warehouse workers, drivers, service technicians, salespeople, advisors (e.g., financial), construction crews, emergency services, and more. What they all have in common is that their work relies heavily on mobile technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-neutral-100-background-color has-background has-lg-font-size\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--sm);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--sm)\">Did you know that, according to Microsoft estimates, mobile workers now account for <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/worklab\/work-trend-index\/technology-unlocks-a-new-future-for-frontline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">about 80% of the global workforce<\/a><\/span><\/strong>? Yes, only one in five employees spends their day in the office!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--sm);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--sm)\">Despite this, for a long time, most corporate IT investments focused on the latter. On the one hand, this is hardly surprising, as it is easier and cheaper to build a solid infrastructure at headquarters than to manage several hundred smartphones and laptops scattered across the country; on the other hand, it is precisely frontline workers who need reliable support the most. No one enjoys filling out forms, especially when at the end of the day you still have to scan them and send them to headquarters \u2013 or, worse yet, deliver them there in person. This approach to document management significantly hinders information exchange within the company, is time-consuming, and invites errors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xs)\">This should be one of the main reasons to invest in mobile devices and software for field workers. With their help, you can <strong>automate most tedious tasks<\/strong> not directly related to core duties, such as report generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-xl-font-size\" id=\"h-access-to-data-here-and-now\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--lg);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xs);font-style:normal;font-weight:700\">Access to data here and now<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xs)\">Second, field workers need constant access to information \u2013 about customers, products, inventory levels, etc. \u2013 regardless of where they are at any given moment. If they are equipped with <strong>smartphones and tablets and have access to company tools<\/strong> (CMS, ERP systems, etc.), this should not be a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-xl-font-size\" id=\"h-process-standardization\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--lg);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xs);font-style:normal;font-weight:700\">Process standardization<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xs)\">Finally, mobile devices make it much <strong>easier to implement and maintain uniform procedures<\/strong>. In companies employing dozens (and sometimes hundreds) of field workers, a \u2018everyone does things their own way\u2019 approach quickly leads to chaos. It\u2019s obvious, but in practice, things can vary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-neutral-100-background-color has-background has-lg-font-size\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--sm);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--sm)\">Imagine a courier with 120 packages to deliver in a single day. They\u2019re unlikely to be able to handle them all by 4 or 5 p.m. if they suddenly lose access to the courier app or to their route-planning and optimization tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xs)\">And such situations, unfortunately, do happen \u2013 for example, because the smartphone\u2019s OS spontaneously starts installing updates that have been postponed for days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-xl-font-size\" id=\"h-essential-tools-and-data\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--lg);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xs);font-style:normal;font-weight:700\">Essential tools and data<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xs)\">Another example: when a sales representative visits a potential customer, they must be able to check the current price list and product availability in a matter of seconds. They should also have access to the customer\u2019s order history and correspondence \u2013 so they know what to discuss with the customer \u2013 as well as to the order management system to finalize the transaction on the spot if the sale is successful. Without this, a significant portion of the workday would be spent making calls to headquarters, and that\u2019s not the point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xs)\">That is why every field employee <strong>must have a full suite of company apps on their device<\/strong> (preferably already configured!), along with contact information for their direct supervisors, necessary documents, and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-xl-font-size\" id=\"h-remote-support\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--lg);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xs);font-style:normal;font-weight:700\">Remote support<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xs)\">One of the biggest headaches of field work is that <strong>when something stops working, you can\u2019t just walk over to the IT department<\/strong>. You either have to contact the help desk, which doesn\u2019t always solve the problem, or wait for someone from headquarters to come and handle the issue, or possibly send the device to the office if we\u2019re talking about a more serious failure. Ideally, administrators have <strong>access to a remote desktop<\/strong>, but more on that in a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-xl-font-size\" id=\"h-work-life-balance\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--lg);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xs);font-style:normal;font-weight:700\">Work-life balance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xs)\">Something that is rarely discussed in the context of technology. Mobile workers often use their own devices (in the so-called <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/proget.pl\/en\/blog\/byod-cyod-cope-cobo-cosu\/\" id=\"1469\">BYOD, or Bring Your Own Device, model<\/a><\/span>) or carry a company phone 24\/7. MDM gives IT administrators extensive control over field workers\u2019 devices \u2013 all without leaving the office. How does this translate into productivity (and comfort!) for frontline workers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-xl-font-size\" id=\"h-managing-mobile-devices-with-mdm\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--lg);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xs);font-style:normal;font-weight:700\">Managing mobile devices with MDM<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--sm)\" class=\"wp-block-list has-lg-font-size\">\n<li><strong>Before employees even receive their devices, the administrator can <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/proget.pl\/en\/auto-enrollment\/\" id=\"1203\">prepare them in bulk<\/a><\/span><\/strong> \u2013 configuring system settings and security, installing all necessary applications, uploading documents, and syncing email accounts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Later, once the devices are in use, MDM enables remote <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/proget.pl\/en\/application-management\/\" id=\"1218\">management of updates<\/a><\/span><\/strong> \u2013 for example, an administrator can schedule them to install after hours. As a result, employees don\u2019t have to spend time on this during the workday, and the company can be sure that everyone has the latest software.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Every good MDM offers a so-called <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/proget.pl\/en\/remote-support\/\" id=\"1083\">remote desktop<\/a><\/span><\/strong> \u2013 it allows the administrator to take control of the device remotely, see what problem the user is experiencing, and fix it themselves without contacting the help desk.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>For those who use their own devices for work \u2013 MDM allows a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/proget.pl\/en\/byod-policy\/\" id=\"846\">separate work profile<\/a><\/span> to be created on a smartphone or tablet<\/strong>, distinct from the personal profile. The administrator ensures the security of company data in the workspace, but only the employee has access to files in the personal space, such as vacation photos.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--sm);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--sm)\">These are a few examples of how MDM can help mobile employees. By implementing such a system, not only can you relieve them of worries about all the \u201ctechnicalities,\u201d but you can also avoid downtime in the event of device issues.
